Tableau GPT - Ai in Tableau Prep, Tableau Pulse & more | Announced at Tableau Conference 2023

The consensus in the tech industry is that AI can be harnessed to enhance product capabilities. Tableau has been a pioneer in integrating AI technology into its tools, and the introduction of Tableau GPT it hopes solidifies its position as an AI-forward entity.

Tableau GPT stands for Tableau Generative Pre-trained Transformer, a technology originally developed by Google. The concept has undergone multiple evolutions, with GPT 4 being the latest and most common example, as seen in OpenAI's Chat GPT version 4.

Tableau's version of GPT is designed as a large language model that understands product-specific terminology and the analytical context within organisations. The technology will serve as an underlying layer across their platform, interacting with various metadata sources to understand user queries.

One way Tableau GPT demonstrates its utility is in the search bar, where users can ask a question about a metric and receive a straightforward response. Another manifestation of Tableau GPT is in Tableau Pulse, a new feature that hosts metrics independent of data visualizations. Here, GPT can generate prompts for questions users could ask of the data source, understand queries related to the data source, and respond to open-ended questions.

Tableau Prep, another application within the Tableau suite, showcases the potential of GPT. In a demo, the user asked GPT how to extract email addresses from a complicated data field, and GPT promptly provided a regex response. This feature can be especially useful when writing calculations within Tableau Desktop.

The power of Tableau GPT likely draws from extensive data sets including knowledge base articles, documentation, Tableau forums, and responses to known issues. Coupled with telemetry data from Tableau Public, this tool promises to deliver rich insights into user behavior and more effective data utilization.

The advent of Tableau GPT reaffirms the company's commitment to AI and its potential to revolutionize data analysis and visualization. By integrating AI technology across its platform, Tableau aims to enhance user experience and facilitate more intuitive data exploration.
